One of the most common criticisms of law students on clinical placements is that they lack telephone communication skills. Speaking confidently over the telephone is an important part of working with clients, especially in law where advice is often provided over the phone. The 'phone a friend' task meets two aims at once: ensuring students have prepared for class, and encouraging them to develop their oral communication skills when using the telephone.

Students are required to conduct field visits to two different sites of disciplinary relevance and write a comparative essay. Students are expected to draw on their first-hand, experiential knowledge of the site and link this to the broader theoretical and conceptual frameworks discussed in the course.

This learning experience (and accompanying assessment) sees students travel to an oversees destination and engage in extended, experiential learning. Students are required to complete a combination of on-site assessment such as practical fieldwork, fieldwork journals and presentations, as well off-site assessment such as final research essays based on fieldwork.

Students choose a material object from a specific collection (in the case of ANTH2208 the UQ Anthropology Museum) on which they must conduct an extended analysis over the duration of a semester. This object-centred learning assessment is divided into two components, an initial report and final research essay.

This student-driven assessment is designed to promote confidence and competence in peer-led practical demonstration. It comprises a lesson plan or seminar notes, and a 15-20 minute teaching demonstration that aligns with a curriculum or discipline. Students showcase their demonstration to peers in class time and facilitate interactive participation and discussion.
